International dictionary of sign languages

Spreadthesign is an international dictionary that aims to make all sign languages of the world accessible.

This pedagogic self-learning tool is free to use for everyone in the world.
In the beginning, Spreadthesign was created with the aim of improving the language skills of our vocational students, when going abroad for work practice.

Between the years 2006 and 2010 we uploaded words and videos from several vocational fields into the dictionary.

In 2012 Spreadthesign improved the functionality and added more languages as well as more words within each language. Spreadthesign then also introduced more sentences and not only single words/signs.

Between the years 2012 and 2015 Spreadthesign inserted even more content to our database - 15 000 signs / words per language. We also added images to some words.

Between the years 2015 and 2018 Spreadthesign conducted a major quality update where we corrected earlier mistakes. We also made a new website with new functionality, for example the map function. During these years we also added even more languages.

Spreadthesign is constantly forming new partnerships with countries and sponsors of this web tool. Each country represented has its own team with responsibility for their language in this web site. If they are not experts themselves it is their responsibility to connect sign language experts for proofreading. The national teams are easy to contact for comments or suggestions.

It is not allowed to download or use our videos or data without permission. The researchers who wrote this study completely ignored seeking such a permission: Stockholm university

Spreadthesign helps thousands of people every day, to find the sign they are searching for. We are also available as apps for smartphones and tablets with the name 'Spread signs'.
